Treatment Nick Rice

Title -Red - break me down

I did the 1st min of the song Red break me down. I think this song was good to do the lyric material gave me alot of ideas to do for this project. I feel this is powerful song so I think the simple text worked well with it.

analysis
I wanted to do more to my project, but issues with my computer and AE have limited me on putting more into it i wanted to do more in the animation and effects.
I made a layer for each word except for the words break me down. So in total i had about 74 layers and my dvd menu is a different color. This was due to my comp issues. I made my menu at home while my actual video was done here, so the color was off.

Conclusions
I am happy with it but i would definintely do more if time and technology aloud me

Project-4 Treatment "Kinetic Typography"

"Pulp Fiction"

-30 sec. scene
I chose to use a scene from the movie pulp fiction. The, "Ezekiel scene", from that movie is famous, and it gave me great inspiration.

I used different fonts - To show the different levels of attitude.
Background pattern- Keeps the flow moving, also is keeps the lines of text, symmetrical at points.
Images- I used all images from, or about the movie, manipulated some added text to others.

My project is a Jim Croce Song that was fast pace. I loved the concept of a player piano and the lyrics on the roll rolling from up to down. I tried to accomplish that in my project.

Title: Just a Ride

Research: I didn't do any research, I had to capture the audio and type out the text.

Treatment:
For this assignment, I wanted to present the philosophy of late comedian Bill Hicks with animated text.

Analysis: I wanted the look to be very fluid, almost dreamy. I animated the text in ways that articulated what he was saying, and I kept certain motifs (Fear, Love, Ride) in the same text to preserve continuity.

Conclusion: I'm very happy with the way it turned out despite a few minor imperfections. I think it took far too long because it was 2 minutes long and I worked in 3d space. I was happy that I didn't find it tedious as much as it was time consuming. If I could, I would have animated the background to make it look more fluid, but I wanted to cut down on render time.

Title: Fantasies

Research: Youtube, Creative Cow, Google, etc.

Treatment: Making a video to show moving typography. I used a clip of Kevin Spacey giving a lecture from the movie, “The Life of David Gale.” I picked this quote because when I first heard it, I thought it was amazingly true. And I also figured everyone can relate to it in some way.

Analysis: The graphic design could have been easier on the eyes. Video also had nice usage of pictures. Color theory was minimally used, but held a nice effect. Animation isn’t the greatest, could have been smoother.

Conclusion: I am happy with the way it turned out. I wouldn’t mind doing more, preferably audios with more pep. This is to show typography through animation, which was something I overlooked. I was more focused on the animation than design. Looking forward to comments so that I can go back and redo the video.

Project 4

Title:

What I’ve Done

Research:

My initial research consisted of finding and watching examples of kinetic typography. Many of these examples used sound samples from television shows or videos. They also used interesting backgrounds. Some even used images and illustrations.

Treatment:

At first, I wanted to use a movie or television sound clip for my video, but I couldn’t find one that I wanted to use. Instead, I decided to use about 40 seconds of a Linkin Park song, “What I’ve Done”. I decided to use dark and contrasting colors, mostly black and red, to emulate the song’s dark edge. The song’s lyrics seem like they could be a person’s private thoughts. Therefore, I decided to make the background look like a notebook page where these thoughts could be written down and later erased or destroyed. I decided that all of the text and image animations would appear on the notebook page similar to how an individual’s journaling would. I decided to use Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to create my background and images. These images would support the song’s lyrics in some way.

Analysis:

Since, my sound clip was a song, I couldn’t make my text speed around very fast like in the kinetic typology examples I saw online. Instead, I focused on keeping my text’s movement flowing and smooth. I also tried to make sure that the text lyric lines stayed in time and in sync with the song. If I were to do the project again, I think I would do a faster song or make sure that I had audio of a video clip.
I mostly used key frames to change my text and images’ position, scale, rotation, and opacity. I also applied several animation presets including mirror and type writer to my text. I used masks to reveal or erase text. In addition, I applied the film burn effect to an adjustment layer that I added to the entire video. I also set the adjustment layer’s blending mode to multiply in order to darken the video and give it a harsher effect.

Conclusion:

Overall, I seemed to have a difficult time with this project. I already spent an enormous amount of time on it but I still feel like I need more time. Every time I tested my video, I found something wrong with it that I needed to fix. Finally, I just didn’t have enough time to fix it. I think my end result of this project won’t really match a lot of the videos we will see in class. The text animations flow around the screen to match the song’s lyrics instead of speeding across the page to catch up with dialogue and sound effects.

Title: That's My King
Research: For my project I chose a famous sermon from pastor S.M. Lockridge. I had to find a good quality version of the sermon; which turned out to be more of a challenge than I thought due to the sermon being preached in the 1970s. But I found it and I began to storyboard.
Treatment: I knew from the start I wanted all my text to form a cross at the end. So it was just getting to that point that turned out to be the challenge.
Analysis: Overall I think my project is OK. I picked a powerful sermon for my audio and it needs a powerful video to coincide with it. I don't think my video fulfills that need but I do think it turned out ok. I need to add more effects and camera movements to keep it more fast paced. It needs a different background although what is more pretty than a perfect sunset?
Conclusion: Overall the only frustration I had was with the Adobe RAM Preview. Only getting to RAM preview in sections is a pain. The biggest pain was after I rendered my video. Some of the text movements that appeared medium speed during the RAM preview turned out to be very fast speed in real life. That is an pain as well. Overall I feel I learned more about After Effects, text layers, null objects, and time management through this project and I look forward to going back and working to make this project perfect this summer.

Kinetic Typography

I used a song for my project. The song is called Underdog by Spoon. I looked at a lot of youtube videos for examples. I wanted to keep it fairly simple since this was my first attempt at kinetic typography, I didn't want to get in over my head. This project turned out to be more difficult than I had anticipated. The words I imported distorted when I scaled them up, so I had to keep it simple. I did not use very many animations because the words go by so quickly that there was not a lot of time before the next group of words needed to come onscreen. I think I could have made my project much better if I had planed out what I wanted words to do a head of time. I kind of just dove in and started. I'm not very satisfied with my work on this project, I could have done better if I had planned better.

Kinetic Typography

I chose a short clip from the movie Role Models. I gave the cashier and the man very straight plain texts mainly because it has a very dry humor to it, they are both different though. I gave the female voice a girly or fancy type font. I started out thinking I would use sentences, and that looked awful, so the beginning is not as good as the end so if anything this was excellent practice. I had to place my text where it looked like the sound wave would be a word and export it to hear how it matched up. The files I had grew and fast as I could think. It was the only way to hear, which is horrible! I got into a good pattern at the end though with judging the wave forms. I really think I could have done better with more time of course, but I took all the time I had. I do think it is decent though, I am proud enough to turn it in at least. Some of the pacing is a bit off, and I needed to use some color I think. I had the hardest time deciding how to animate the text. I never imagined it being so hard to decide where to place it all.

Kinetic Typography - Vaya Con Cornholio

Title: Vaya Con Cornholio
Research: Did a search on Cornholio, found youtube clip, captured the audio, trimmed it to what i wanted.
Treatment: I used fonts to match the attitudes of the characters, and then chose colors to go with the fonts, that best matched the attitueds of the characters. I went with fast movements, because this type of thing is boring otherwise.
Conclusion: This can be a cool addition to a project and can be valuable to my web design work for web advertisements, and maybe even short little commercials or assents in them. I learned how many years of time you can save when turning off all motion blurring while previewing, how to get a really quick, but cheap render for testing at final speeds, playing with things and trying to match up with the audio also helped me to understand the text animation system a little better also....now I'll cross my fingers and hope for a decent grade.

Project 4 (Kinetic Typography)

Title: Wicked
Research: I use Yahoo images to obtain my pictures
Treatment: When this project was asigned I knew what song I wanted to use. The question was how did I want it to look. So I messed around with a couple of diffrent looks before I settled on the final one.
Analysis: I had fun with this project once I figured out where all the tools were in the program. This is definately something I would like to continue to do in the future.
Conclusion: Looking back on the project my biggest complaint is the RAM Preview. What a pain in the Butt! My eyes got so tired of looking at the completed area's when I was working further into the project. When you're working in Premier at least you can scrub only the area you want to work in. Also, with the audio file I should have added silence to the end to make the fade out transition much better. Other than those to issues I am very pleased with my project.
